66th Anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter


A conference on the occasion of the 66th Anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter, dating back to 1945,  was organized on 21 October, 2011, by the NGO Liason Unit of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), and the Geneva International Model United Nations (GIMUN).  
Also present to commemorate the anniversary was Ms.  Daniel Schender, FDFA, UN Coordination Unit Security Council and Political Affairs. Ms. Schender asserted that inspiration, values and commitment are three very important tools to incorporate into one’s life work, she explained « You must find what you love if you have not found it – keep looking. »
After speeches from the distinguished guests the participants selected and attend four distinct panels addressing timely issues that involve the United Nations.
The conference titled, « The United Nations in our day-to - day» was graced by the presence of Director-General of UNOG, Mr. Tokayev who addressed students and interns who comprised the majority of attendees at the event. The director commented on the lasting impact the United Nations Charter plays on current international efforts extending to conflict prevention, humanitarian aid, refugee assistance, the promotion of democracy, advancement of healthcare systems, and the employment of peacekeeping individuals.  The Director General noted the important challenges and milestones the UN encountered this past year such as the reconciliation process in Lybia, the crisis in Somalia and the Horn of Africa. After recalling the integration of the new member stateSouth Sudan,  Mr. Tokayev concluded that the United Nations is an organization witnessing continuous change. Moreover, he challenged the youth present to take the future in their hands by actively engaging in this change.
