After the creation of the UN Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) in 2006, the country has taken important steps toward peace and development.
The mission was created in 2006 to face the outbreak of deadly violence. Its aim is to train the national police to maintain peace and stability in the country. After many years, the country has finally achieved consolidated peace and development through the reconstitution of the national police. The country’s Special Representative, Ameerah Haq, discussed the possibility of the peacekeeping mission withdrawing from Timor-Leste, but “this phase will be critical in ensuring Timor-Leste National police ability to guarantee security ahead of UNIMIT’s eventual withdrawal,” she said.
Moreover, she emphasized that “a smooth and successful UNIMIT withdrawal, can also serve as a best practice for other peacekeeping missions” and “these progresses can be maintained only if the political leaders and the public opinion continuing to act in a responsible way.”

Despite the progress in peace and development, the country still suffers high rate of unemployment and poverty, but the population believes that the ongoing socio-economic development will help resolve these issues.
Currently, the country is preparing itself for a presidential and parliamentary election which is expected to take place in 2012. The Government of Timor-Leste stressed that the assistance of the UNIMIT body during the election will better guarantee the credibility of its results.
